These developments are rooted in a worldview that strictly separates humans from nature, design from fabrication. Wet Weaving is a response: an experimental material methodology that combines technical innovation with a different design sensibility. &nbsp; &nbsp; Wet Weaving draws on three design principles. Design Global, Manufacture Local understands knowledge as a commons, translated into production locally. Commons-Based Peer Production describes the collaborative creation of knowledge and physical commons beyond market logic. More-Than-Human Design expands the design process to include non-human beings, materials and environment as active co-creators. Yarn is dipped in liquid clay, woven onto a frame, dried, dipped again, and fired at 900°C. The yarn burns away completely – what remains is a ceramic structure whose porosity corresponds to the textile weave. The clay is fully circular: rejects become grog – raw material for new ceramic bodies. Cracks that form during the process are not defects but functional properties – they increase the evaporation surface and enable passive cooling and temporary water storage. &nbsp; &nbsp; Across a series of 14 samples, variables such as yarn type, weave pattern, clay consistency, and drying processes were iteratively tested. Sample 9 achieved up to 15°C of temperature reduction – demonstrating controlled crack formation as quality, not flaw. Through the interplay of experimentation and design, the Porous Panel System emerged – a translation of the material principle into architectural scale. It contributes to the Sponge City: absorbing rainfall, storing water, and counteracting urban overheating. Konrad and Ben joined forces to work further on the Rain Bricks, especially on the attachment to the wall. By using local clay, which can be found in abundance, we hope to create an understanding of the materiality of the Rain Bricks and to point out that this material is widely available. The basic intention is to show a more decentralized and transparent approach to production methods based on local resources combined with globally shared knowledge. We see short production and delivery distances as well as a stronger bond between consumers and products through materiality as beneficial. We also believe that sharing knowledge about manufacturing techniques is important for real progress, so that they can be emulated and further developed. &nbsp; &nbsp; The extrusion process is widely used in the industrial production of bricks. In this process, the ceramic mass is pressed by machine through a template into a strand and then further processed. The diversity of Rain Bricks results from an extruded shape, which is subsequently processed by hand. Classic operations from the ceramic craft such as slipping, deforming and incising are used. &nbsp; &nbsp; The surface of each stone is highly textured to allow algae and moss growth (bioreceptivity). In the constructional application there are two variations. The first is similar to classical masonry: stones are mortared in offset stacks, the stackability of the form aids bricklaying. Individual bricks are curved outward to direct water raining on the facade to the inside of the bricks. The second variant has a rail on the back, and thus allows non-permanent, flexible attachment with the help of screwable hooks. This allows easy replacement of individual stones in case of damage. From both variants there are special stones, which are closed on one side or on both sides to create different application possibilities. &nbsp; &nbsp; Valves can be connected on them, small birdbaths or planting stones can be installed and the direction of water flow can be determined. Planned in big scale and predetermined in shape and colour, there is little room for unexpectedness and novelty. With the justification of form following function, any additional features are often considered unnecessary details. The modern design language of the outdoor public space seems to overlook the impact our surroundings have on our behaviour, thoughts and feelings. The environment we spend so much time in should have the ability to mean something to us. An environment we can connect with and get inspired by. Instead we are offered a dull, flat and textureless space that shows little sign of social life or representation of its community - the public. Recontextualising common construction barriers, converts a movement limitation into an invitation for social interaction. By being given a new purpose, an element that symbolises restriction provokes to reconsider the function of the public space and how we interact with it. The barriers are temporarily placed in the public space, which technically makes them public goods. Yet we cannot really interact with them, but are instructed on how to behave.
